Here's a scenario that plays out in eye doctors' offices every day. Someone comes in because they keep seeing floaters, or flashes of light, or their vision just feels dimmer than it used to. The doctor runs the full workup: dye in the arm to map the blood vessels, pressure checks, a look at the retina.

 

Everything comes back clean. No detachment, no disease, no explanation. The patient goes home with normal test results and the same symptoms they walked in with.

 

I spent a recent solo episode making the case that "normal" isn't the same as "nothing is wrong," and that the next place to look isn't the eye at all. It's the liver.

 

The eyes are not a separate system. They're brain tissue.

 

Before I got to Traditional Chinese Medicine, I opened the episode with a claim that sounds like it belongs to TCM but is actually straight developmental biology, and it's worth separating from everything that follows because it changes how the whole rest of the episode should be read.

 

"Your eyes are basically directly connected to your brain," I said. "Your eyes are like little mini brains. They basically grow off your brain right when you're an embryo."

 

Later: "The eyes are basically the first organs that grow off of your brain. They are neurological tissue. They are a map of the brain."

 

In the fourth week of human embryonic development, structures called optic vesicles bud directly off the developing forebrain and go on to become the retina and optic nerve. The retina is, developmentally and histologically, an outgrowth of the central nervous system, the same reason a neurologist examining your retina during an eye exam is, in a very literal sense, looking at exposed brain tissue. This is not a metaphor borrowed from Eastern medicine. It's the reason ophthalmologists and neurologists have always treated the eye as a diagnostic window into the brain, and it's also TCM's oldest eye doctrine: the liver "opens into" the eyes.

 

TCM predates modern embryology by thousands of years but arrives at a related idea through a completely different method: pattern observation rather than dissection.

 

What if I told you that in traditional Chinese medicine, the eyes are directly connected to the liver? Liver health gives vision health. It's connected to TCM's broader system of organ-to-sense-organ pairings: the kidneys open into the ears, the spleen and stomach relate to the mouth, and the liver, in this framework, opens into the eyes. This is a real, foundational piece of TCM doctrine, documented across the tradition's core texts and every standard reference on TCM physiology, not something invented for the podcast.

 

What TCM couldn't have known, because the tools didn't exist yet, is the specific biochemical mechanism that makes the liver-eye link real rather than purely symbolic.

 

The actual biochemistry: your liver is a vitamin A warehouse for your eyes

 

Here's where the episode's TCM framing and modern nutritional science land on the same conclusion by two entirely different roads. The liver is directly related to the eyes. Why? Because the liver is a storehouse.

 

The liver stores vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that your eyes need to get stronger and to maintain health. One of the main components is vitamin A. The liver stores vitamin A, and it attaches it to a small retinol molecule that actually transfers it up to your eyes to feed to the rods and cones in your eyes to give them strength to operate fully.

 

This is accurate, well-documented biochemistry, not a TCM-only claim. The liver stores roughly 50 to 80 percent of the body's vitamin A. A liver-produced carrier called retinol-binding protein transports that stored vitamin A through the bloodstream to the retina, where it converts into 11-cis-retinal, the actual light-sensing molecule inside the rod and cone photoreceptors that let you see in the first place. A vitamin A supply problem is a well-established, textbook cause of night blindness and, left uncorrected, more serious vision loss.

 

So when I say the liver "feeds" the eyes, that's not TCM poetry. It's a real, specific, named biological pathway.

 

What happens when the liver is the one that's sick

 

The episode's central argument builds from there: if the liver is genuinely a hidden infection's favorite hiding place (Lyme, mold, a lingering viral infection that never fully cleared), then a compromised liver isn't just failing to detoxify the body. It's failing at its other job too, storing and delivering the nutrients the eyes specifically depend on.

 

In the episode, I describe checking a patient's liver enzymes and blood cell ratios for signs of an underlying infection when a standard eye workup comes back clean, and using specialty labs (Microgen DX, a real qPCR and next-generation sequencing lab; Mosaic Labs, formerly Great Plains Laboratory, which does direct stool microscopy for parasites; Vibrant Wellness; and GI-MAP, a comprehensive stool panel actually made by Genova Diagnostics) when I suspect something a standard blood panel would miss.

 

Here's an interesting possibility about floaters themselves. Most people are told floaters are simply dead cell debris drifting in the eye's vitreous fluid, and that's true as a baseline explanation. But I have had patients who say their floaters look like "little worms are crawling across my eyes," and I think some of what gets written off as ordinary floaters could actually be a pathogen or parasite suspended in that same fluid.

 

This is what happened to me: a period of active Lyme disease in which my right eye briefly lost vision entirely, followed months later by a diagnosis (via dye testing and a direct look at the retina) of fluid buildup and small pinholes around the retina that my doctor described as looking like "something burrowed into the eye." The fluid fully resolved over about a year of herbal treatment alongside my ongoing Lyme and mold protocol.

 

If your eye exam keeps coming back normal but your symptoms haven't gone away, the next question worth asking isn't "what's wrong with my eyes." It's "what's going on with my liver, and is there an old infection my standard bloodwork wouldn't catch." That's a testable, specific hypothesis, not a vague wellness platitude, and it's backed by real biochemistry (the vitamin A pathway).
